If you think that the ebook reader market is a straight Kindle vs Nook at the moment then that would be perfectly understandable. The public does seem to be expressing a really strong preference to buy their ebook readers from companies which have a strong association with books.
Pure electronics manufacturers, like Sony for instance, seem to be having a tough time securing any significant market share just at the moment. Don’t forget, apart from having some excellent readers on offer, Sony had their readers on the market well before either Amazon or Barnes and Noble. However, it seems that a link to books and reading is a prerequisite for success at this time.
It’s not the only advantage that booksellers like Amazon and Barnes and Noble enjoy. They can, if they wish, offset the price of their ebook reader hardware against future ebook sales and offer their customers lower prices for their readers.
